The healing power of shared moments in grief

Grief. It’s a heavy word that can feel like a giant elephant sitting on your chest. Whether you’ve lost a loved one, ended a relationship, or experienced another profound change, grief comes knocking, uninvited and insistent. But here’s a secret: you don’t have to face that elephant alone. In fact, sharing your story and hearing others’ can transform that pesky pachyderm into something a bit more manageable. And as you share, the healing begins.

What is a pachyderm?

pachyderm. noun. pachy·derm ˈpak-i-ˌdərm.: any of various nonruminant mammals (such as an elephant, a rhinoceros, or a hippopotamus) of a former group (Pachydermata) that have hooves or nails resembling hooves and usually thick skin. Especially: elephant. Pachydermos in Greek means literally “having thick skin.” There’s an interesting read about them on this page, if you’re interested.

Let’s dive into the entertaining, sometimes whimsical world of shared stories and the surprising magic they bring to grieving hearts.

Storytelling, the ultimate icebreaker

Picture this: you’re at a party and someone mentions a ridiculous mishap they had while trying to cook a fancy dinner. Suddenly, everyone is chiming in with their own kitchen disasters. Laughter fills the room, and just like that, strangers become friends. Now, imagine this same principle applied to grief. When we share our stories of loss, it breaks the ice, creating connections where there was once isolation. You realise, “Hey, I’m not the only one who feels this way,” and that shared experience can be a powerful balm for the soul.

Turning tears into triumphs

Have you ever laughed until you cried? Or cried until you laughed? Emotions are wild, unpredictable creatures, and sometimes they like to mingle. Sharing stories about loved ones can be a rollercoaster ride through tears and laughter. It’s those moments of humour amidst the heartache that remind us of the joy and love that existed and still exist in our memories. Through storytelling, we find pockets of triumph even in our darkest times, celebrating lives lived rather than just mourning their loss.

The quirky quilt of connection

Think of each story as a patch in a quilt. Alone, each patch might just be a piece of fabric, but together, they create something warm, comforting, and uniquely beautiful. When we share our stories, we’re adding patches to the collective quilt of human experience. Each anecdote, whether funny, poignant, or bittersweet, weaves us closer together, creating a tapestry of understanding and empathy.

The quirky quilt of connection we build can offer solace and support, wrapping us in the warmth of shared humanity.

Finding your voice and letting it sing

Finding the courage to share your story can be intimidating, like standing on the edge of a diving board for the first time. But once you take the plunge, you might discover that your voice has wings. Sharing your grief story isn’t just about finding comfort for yourself; it’s about giving others permission to do the same. Your voice can become a beacon of light, guiding others through their own dark times and creating a symphony of shared healing.

Grief, fun and playfulness

Let’s not forget the fun in all of this. Yes, grief is serious and often painful, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find moments of levity. Sharing funny stories, embarrassing moments, or sweet, silly memories of those we’ve lost can lift our spirits and bring smiles to faces that haven’t seen them in a while. It’s these light-hearted moments that help balance the scales, reminding us that joy and sorrow often dance hand-in-hand.

Embrace the elephant (and maybe paint it pink)

gold and red dragon figurineShared moments through shared stories are like painting that grief elephant pink and giving it a name. Suddenly, it’s not so scary. It’s something we can talk about, laugh about, and maybe even find some beauty in. By opening up and connecting through our stories, we create a vibrant community of support, love, and understanding.

Remember, your story matters. It’s a thread in the grand tapestry of life, and sharing it can bring light to both you and those who hear it. So go ahead, embrace the power of storytelling, and let’s turn our shared moments into shared healing. Because together, we can make that elephant a little less daunting and a lot more colourful.
